The Day of Thunder

Kumori’s feet took her from the head woman’s home back in the direction of Yoshie and Daisuke’s residence at the edge of town. Her stomach was full and her heart resupplied. She wasn’t Han-Hei anymore… but she wasn’t going to be someone else entirely either.

The mix of good food and good drink worked on her memories a bit… and she began singing a song to herself along the road.

”Mother, would you sing to us?”

“It’s not my job to sing to you Tae. It is your job to go to sleep.”

The door slid closed…

The silence hung in the air.

“Hey Tae…”

“Yeah?”

“I’ll sing for you.”

“Okay.”

“Home is behind…

The world ahead…

And there are many paths to tread…

Through shadow…

To the edge of night…

Until the stars are all alight…

Mist and shadow…

Cloud and shade…

All shall fade…

She's not the only one walking after the party. Probably not the only one singing, either.

Akutou's not singing, though, which is likely for everybody's benefit.

He does keep an eye open for goings-on, because it is getting on in the day and he's pretty confident the locals are getting more used to his presence.

"Ma'am," he says at an encounter with her, tipping his hat deeply.

"Or do I hafta call you somethin' fancier?" he adds, the question only that.

He finally spots something; a back alley one of the locals slips into on the way home.

She smiled at the Otomo and nodded in greeting.

In a slightly inebriated and obviously facetious voice she replied, “I go by… Your Awesomeness, Your Brilliance, Your Amazingness, and my personal favorite… Your Worshipfulness.”

She then smiled, “But friends call me Kumori.”

"Well, then, Kumori-sama," Akutou ventures, "didja see that yonder?"

He nods his head towards the alley.

"Might could be somethin' interestin', if'n you're game."

She looks over in the direction he points and then tilts her head.

“Why not…”

Akutou smiles and heads that way.

“You often look for trouble down dark alleys?” She asked as they walked.

His player back from a day of meetings, Akutou nods and says "That's often where t' find it."

A few steps later, he adds "There's always some kinda thing like this, some bits o', well, people ain't doin' what they oughta be doin'. I lived in one f'r a number o' years, an' I end up findin' 'em most ev'ry place I go. Given that we've got trouble brewin', fig'red it might be good t' know what's here. Could be a help. Could be a prob'em needs solved."

He glances to her and adds "O' course, your speechifyin' might make th' former more likely. But we won't know 'less we go in."

She nodded, “Yeah… despite my hope that there isn’t any reason to fear the villagers here… Someone did drug the fireworks. And something is… unsettling about this place. There might be some bad actors around.”

"An' even aside fr'm spooky chicanery," Akutou replies, "might could be there's some kids or somesuch as needs some he'p."

His face grows hard.

"Been too many of 'em as is."

“You’ll have to let me know why that is sometime…” She said sympathetically while they neared the shady street of shadiness.

"Might could," Akutou allows as they reach the alley.

He looks down it, seeing if he can tell where the local he saw dip into it surreptitiously went.

They seemed to slip into a door behind one of the houses.

"This way, ma'am," Akutou whispers, following slowly.

He places his feet carefully, moving more slowly but making sure he does not catch things that will give him too much away.
