Deep in the cave, he saw him - his brother, his twin, his other half. He was on his knees, wrists manacled and chained. The chains themselves rose and disappeared into the darkness of the cave, their origins invisible.
"Shiba!" He called, running over.
Shiba weakly raised his eyes, looking up at him with eyes that were both exhausted and glowing with flame. "Don't... come near... Or you will also-"
His words were cut off as he tipped his head back and cried out, fire suddenly pouring from his mouth and eyes and wreathing him in flame. Its colors reflected off the metal as the manacles dropped to the ground with a clatter, red, yellow, hot white, and, somehow, the deepest of blackness hidden within. The flame took a shape after a moment, forming into a grotesque phoenix made of black and green fire as Shiba's colors were consumed.
It breathed flame at him, and he could feel his skin peel and split from the heat, the corruption sinking in...
Bayushi's eyes snapped open and he sat up abruptly from his bed. He found himself drawn back down quickly, though, to rest his head on soft silk. Looking up, he met the eyes of his wife as she gazed down at him. Her expression was creased in worry and she ran her hands through his long hair slowly.
"Something happened," she said softly. It wasn't a question.
Bayushi simply nodded. She leaned down and wrapped her arms around him. No words of comfort fell from her lips. They may use deception as a weapon against others, but they had promised they wouldn't not lie to each other.
