This jade giving should totally happen behind the scene so we can have a flashback revealing we had jade (almost) all along at the most dramatically appropriate moment.
[this is actually a main mechanic in City of Mist, where you can by the book roll for something you totally did in the past but has only become relevant now, like getting a priest to bless the water in your gourd]
